چکیده

Rigid stability has long been the accepted major principle for treatment of non-union of shaft fractures (MUller, Allgower and Willenegger 1965; B#{246}hler1966; MUller 1966; KUntscher 1967). Until recently, methods of gaining stability have usually combined internal fixation by osteosyntheses and external fixation by plaster or traction (Boyd, Anderson and Johnston 1966). These methods have the disadvantage of further increasing the joint stiffness and muscle atrophy which usually accompany non-union. Moreover, the fixation does not allow weightbearing, an important stimulus to fracture union. It was therefore interesting that KUntscher (Fischer 1965, KUntscher 1967) was able to improve on his method of intramedullary nail fixation by reaming the shaft to uniform diameter, thus ensuring such rigid fracture fixation that immediatejoint movement and weight-bearing could be allowed even in cases of non-union (Maurath and Christ 1963). This paper reports a consecutive series of thirty-five cases of non-union of femur or tibia, treated by the modern K#{252}ntscher method. Before operation some of these limbs were subjected to transfixation distraction for correction of shortening or mal-alignment (K#{252}ntscher 1967, Christensen 1970).

Non-:::union::: is a complication in the management of patients who have a fracture of the tibia. The records of twenty patients who were treated by intramedullary nailing with reaming for non :::union::: of the tibia were reviewed.   The fractures had been treated initially by closed reduction and immobilization in a cast, external fixation, fixation by pins in a plaster cast and dynamic comp...

The use of combined 3.5 LCP unicortical plate and nail fixation in proximal tibia fractures and prevention of valgus and anterior angulation

Introduction: Intramedullary nailing (IMN) of high tibia fracture has some mechanical and biological advantages over the other form of fixation. However, valgus, apex anterior malalignment and anterior displacement of proximal fragment commonly occur after isolated IMN fixation of proximal high tibia fracture. The purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of using 3.5-mm locking c...

Elastic Stable Intramedullary Nailing of Femoral Shaft Fracture-Experience in 48 Children

Background: Femoral shaft fractures are an incapacitating pediatric injury accounting for 1.6% of all pediatric bonyinjuries. Management of these fractures is largely directed by age, fracture pattern, associated injuries, built of the childand socioeconomic status of the family. We retrospectively evaluated the use of elastic stable intramedullary nail (ESIN)in surgical management of femoral s...

Treatment Outcome of Intramedullary Fixation with a Locked Rigid Nail in Humeral Shaft Fractures

Background: The aim of this study was to determine the treatment outcome of humeral shaft fractures with a locked rigid intramedullary nail in patients indicated for surgical treatment. Methods: In this descriptive-cross sectional study, all patients were followed up for one, six, and 18 months post operatively. The Short Form Questionnaire (SF-36) and Constant Shoulder Score were applied. Re...
